A Mitsubishi Colt replacement in the making, perhaps? It certainly looks worthy of carrying the near 50-year-old badge but this Mitsubishi CS Design Concept is just a concept at this stage, one conjured up by independent designer Gabor Farkas.

Gabor Farkas’ approach combines futuristic visuals typically seen on ‘concept cars’ with a presence that wouldn’t look too out of place if it were to hit showrooms today. It features the same nose as the popular Mitsubishi Lancer too, which blends well with the completely new, and ‘phat’, rear-end shape.

Adding a car like this into the lineup could help Mitsubishi a lot, and provide an additional option in the small car segment. Currently, the only car to come close is the Mitsubishi Colt sold today. It is a small car but it’s targeted towards the likes of the Honda Jazz; featuring small and tall, almost MPV-like, van proportions.

Mitsubishi Plug-in SUV

Mitsubishi said it plans to launch a plug-in hybrid Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) in 2013. The company noted that the SUV will be similar to the Px-MiEV concept car, which it had shown at the 2009 Tokyo auto show. The company also added that the plug-in hybrid is in its final stages of development.
The four-wheel-drive Px-MiEV concept was powered by a 1.6-liter four cylinder mated to a hybrid system with two electric motors, with one for the front wheels and one for the rear. The Japanese car maker noted that at the time the Px-MiEV could travel up to 30 miles in electric mode before switching to gasoline-electric mode.
The company said that it also plans to launch its i-MiEV electric vehicle in just three West Coast states and Hawaii as the U.S. sales is expected to begin in November 2011. Mitsubishi has changed the name of the vehicle for the U.S. market from i-MiEV to the “i powered by MiEV.” The i will be a 2012 model when it goes on sale, added the Japanese automaker.

Mitsubishi is aiming to cut the price of its electric i-MiEV model to just 2 million yen (equivalent to just £14,820) by 2012, Japanese publication Nikkei reports today.

The electric car model has been criticised for its very high price tag of £38,699 including VAT-this compares to just £28,350 for its main rival- the Nissan Leaf.

While both models will benefit from price-reducing grants and incentives in countries including the UK, US and Japan, the i-MiEV remains nonetheless much more expensive than its larger, more family-friendly rival.

But today, the Japanese firm hit back, claiming that it expects the price can be cut by nearly half within the nest two years as the scales of economy tip in its favour. Price cuts will come to make the model more competitive with hybrids while mass production of lithium ion batteries, the most expensive component of an electric vehicle, will help lower costs sharply.

An unnamed source at Mitsubishi told Nikkei that the electric model, originally priced at 4.59 million yen when it was unveiled last July, will effectively sell for 2 million yen after factoring in government subsidies.

Likewise, in the UK the i-MiEV is expected to benefit from Government grants of £5,000 to reduce its price to just under £34,000.

Priced from £14,999 to £22,049 it’s competitively positioned, and being a Mitsubishi the level of equipment available is good, even with the entry-level ASX 2 trim level.

The Mitsubishi ASX is available with a 115bhp 1.6-litre petrol or 147bhp 1.8-litre DiD turbodiesel engine, the latter getting two- or four-wheel drive. Of the two, it’s the diesel engine which offers the best performance and most advanced technology.

It’s the world’s first diesel car fitted with variable valve timing, a technology pioneered in petrol engines. The result is a 1.8-litre motor with the power of a bigger engine. And it performs as well in the real world as it does on paper, with a quiet and smooth power delivery and willingness to rev.

In fourth gear in particular the 1.8-litre DiD ASX has a surprising turn of speed, making overtakes quick and safe. It reaches 62mph from a standstill in 9.7 seconds (10 for the 4×4) and has a top speed of 124mph.

It also manages 51.4mpg (49.6 for the four-wheel drive) and emits 145g/km of CO2 (or 150g/km). The petrol engine can achieve 47.1mpg while emitting 138g/km of CO2.

Mitsubishi has worked hard on improving economy and the ASX is fitted with stop and start technology, regenerative braking, low-consumption lights, low rolling-resistance tyres, electric power steering and uses low viscosity engine oil. And, while it might not look it, it’s also one of the most aerodynamic small SUVs on the market.

New for the 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander GT is a three-mode (Tarmac, Snow and Lock), adjustable all-wheel-drive (S-AWC in Mitsu-speak) system derived from the Lancer Evolution. This uses a first-in-class active front differential and an electronic center diff to swap power fore, aft, port and starboard to offer unparalleled &mash; at least in the crossover segment — traction and stability. The Outlander still has magnesium shift paddles and aluminum pedals. It's still got a strong 3.0-liter V6, keyless entry and ignition, and a totally bitchin' (if awkwardly named) Flap-Folding Tailgate for our cameramen to shoot from.

The new stuff for 2010 includes a revised, full-color multi-information display that replaces the red dot-matrix display that cursed the old car. The stereo has also been bolstered by the addition of a USB input with iPod connectivity via a hands-free system that also handles Bluetooth calling. (Don't worry, though; the yellow/white/red plugs are still available.) The Rockford Fosgate stereo has also been turned up to 11 now, pumping out an additional 60 watts of boom for a total of 710 watts through eight speakers and a 10-inch subwoofer. And while our 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander had a 30GB music storage system, Mitsubishi's now added some extra there for the 2010 Outlander, so we've got 40GB.

Mitsubishi's 3.0-liter V6 with variable valve timing has been upgraded as well. The engine now makes 230 hp at 6,250 rpm and 215 pound-feet of torque at 3,750 rpm. Thanks to the 2010 Outlander's incorporation of Mitsubishi's new auto-neutral feature that disengages the transmission when the computers feel that freewheeling is more fuel-efficient, the new SUV's EPA ratings have improved, but only by 1 mpg across the board — 18 mpg city, 24 mpg highway and 20 mpg combined.

But as much as we appreciate any bump in power, we have to keep in mind for the duration of this test that the Toyota RAV4 can be equipped with a 269-hp V6. It's one thing to look fast and point out one's rally heritage, but it's another thing altogether to get smoked off the line by Sam Soccer-dad in a Toyota. Is the existence of the 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander GT justified on looks and handling alone?

In order to capitalize on the growing popularity of lower priced cars, Mitsubishi is aiming to lower the price of its electric vehicles to $21,890 by 2012; that is 30% below current prices. The main contributing component to the price of the cars is the Li batteries, of which mass production is expected to lower the costs significantly.

Mitsubishi has a plant coming online in April of 2012, which will produce 70,000 units per year, cutting battery costs to less than 1 million yen per vehicle, from 2.5 million yen. A spokesman for the company has said that Mitsubishi aims to reduce the price of its i-MiEV electric car by lowering output costs, but a time frame has not yet been set.

Mitsubishi has announced a starting price for the car in Germany of about 48,000 euros, or $59,390. The company is also set however, to build versions of the car for its partner PSA/Peugeot-Citroen, which has said that the vehicles will retail for about 35,000 euros before incentives, and less than 30,000 after incentives.

The 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander GT S AWC has just gotten better and by better we mean in the looks department for one.

Mitsubishi has given the 2010 Outlander the same aggressive front nose featured on the Lancer. At first glance one may think it is a jacked up Lancer on steroids. One may also question the power plant under the hood? Could the folks at Mitsubishi gone mad and placed the Lancer Evolution engine under the hood? Not quite but one can still dream at this point.

More specifically the Outlander GT S AWC we tested has a smooth and powerful V-6 under the hood, which is good for 230 hp at 6,250 rpm. Some other publications have tested the car 0-60 and revealed a time in the low 7’s, which means this Outlander GT-S, is no slouch.

Back to the thoughts on it’s brother car the Lancer Evolution: the Outlander GT S AWC also shares the same Super All Wheel Control System (S-AWC) found in the Lancer Evolution which means that this sporty crossover is more than capable of taking a few corners.

Drive one of Mitsubishi's i-Miev electric cars from San Francisco to Sacramento. But there were two things wrong. No. 1, the i-Miev is based on Mitsubishi's i model, a Japanese Kei-class car designed for cities and not the length of high-speed freeway we would drive into California's Central Valley. No 2, it is 85 miles from San Francisco to Sacramento and Mitsubishi puts the i-Miev's best range at 80 miles.

We can solve one of these problems with a stop at a new Eaton rapid charger in Vacaville, about 55 miles outside of San Francisco. That charger should bring the i-Miev's batteries to an 80 percent charge in 25 minutes, reminding us that "rapid" is a relative term. Mitsubishi scheduled a lunch during the recharge stop, as five i-Mievs would need to take turns at the single charging station.

We were presented with a small number of i-Mievs, various test cars that had been brought over to California from Japan, all with right-hand drive. Our first lesson in right-hand drive is that you turn on the windshield wipers to signal a turn.

Alternative fuels are still stuck inside the chicken-and-the-egg dilemma. No one wants to commit to building an alternate fueling infrastructure (the egg) before there’s a critical mass of vehicles (the chicken) out there to use it. And vice versa. Frustrating as that logic loop is to be caught in, there are indications that there are ways out of it. One ray of sunshine (literally) is the quick charger station for electric vehicles in Vacaville, Calif.

Mitsubishi, which is planning to send a version of its i-Miev electric car here next year, seized upon the Vacaville charging station as a solid excuse for a press event touting both its vehicle and the potential infrastructure represented by the quick charger.

The plan was straightforward: A group of journalists would travel in five Japanese-market i-Mievs from San Francisco across the Bay Bridge and then northeast up I-80 to Vacaville. That’s a total of just about 54 miles; within the i-Miev’s range as long as the air conditioning wasn’t turned on and the drivers were careful.

Mitsubishi electric car i-Miev to be part of a NSW Government trial by the Department of Environment Climate Change and Water (DECCW). Mitsubishi’s innovative i-MiEV electric vehicle has today been showcased at NSW Parliament House as part of a NSW Government Trial.

The vehicle, one of only two in the country, is being trialled this week by staff at the Department of Environment Climate Change and Water (DECCW) to test its performance as part of a working fleet. During an official inspection NSW Environment and Climate Change Minister Frank Sartor met with Mitsubishi's Vice President of Brand and Marketing, Paul Unerkov, received a brief presentation on Mitsubishi’s benchmark electric vehicle technology, and enjoyed a drive in the snappy city commuter.

Mr Sartor is enthusiastic about the potential of electric vehicles in NSW. “Our fleet has about 25,000 vehicles so the potential for electric cars to help us make savings in carbon emissions is huge," he said.

Mr Sartor said the NSW Government has formed an Electric Vehicle Taskforce to look at the technology, infrastructure, policy, and legislation that would ensure motorists could gain early access to electric vehicles.

Mr Unerkov said “The team at Mitsubishi Motors is proud to be at the forefront of the evolution of environmentally sound motoring in Australia and is looking forward to working with the government on creating a sustainable future”.

Mitsubishi Motors Australia Limited has confirmed its new sub-compact all-wheel drive vehicle will be known as the ASX when it arrives in Australia in August.

According to MMAL’s president and CEO, Masahiko Takahashi, the ASX nameplate is based on the concept of an “Active Smart Crossover.”

“The ASX is primarily a city car - very stylish and manoeuvrable around town - and the adoption of the European brand name reflects this.

“But ASX is more than just a pretty face. It also has the added benefit of being very smart, especially in terms of the technology that drives its engineering, design and all-wheel drive ability,” Takahashi said.

The ASX is closely based on the Concept-cX show car, first unveiled at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show. The vehicle is available in Europe and Japan with a variety of power plants, and the choice of either two or four-wheel drive configurations.

While MMAL has not yet revealed full specifications for the ASX range, the company has confirmed that the Australian line-up will include both diesel and petrol engines and will be available for sale in Australia in August.

The Mitsubishi Outlander GT doesn't exactly leap to mind when discussing the crossover category of vehicles.

But auto reviewer Scott Wasser says the Outlander stands out in several ways in a crowded class.

Styling is one reason. The Outlander, which has been around in its current form since 2006, is offered in four different trim levels, and all of them received a noticeable facelift for 2010.

"The Outlander was comfortable and relatively quiet on the interstate and fun to drive around town," Wasser says in his latest review. "It seemed more enthusiastic than most competitors about taking on twisting back roads, perhaps a tribute to Mitsubishi's road rally heritage."

Starting prices range from $20,840 for a front-wheel drive ES to $29,250 for an all-wheel drive GT like the vehicle tested. While Wasser liked the Outlander's styling and performance, he notes the price on the vehicle he tested was as much as some luxurious midsize crossovers.

The vehicle, he says, is well suited for consumers who want a sporty and versatile compact crossover and would rather stand out from the crowd than blend into it.

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) will premiere its ASX all-new compact crossover from Tuesday March 2, 2010 to Sunday March 14, 2010 at the 80th Geneva International Motor Show held at the Geneva Palexpo in Switzerland.

The ASX is the European-spec version of the Japanese RVR, which is slated to go on sale in Japan from February 2010. Mitsubishi is recalling both the 2004 Endeavor SUV and 2010 Galant sedan over possible corrosion issues that could cause flammable fluids to leak. The safety recall affects approximately 56,113 Endeavors and 2,307 Galants across the United States.

The Endeavors in question are those that were originally sold or currently registered in states where road salt is used to clear away snow and ice in the winter. According to NHTSA, road salt, mixed with other debris, can become trapped between the Endeavor's fuel filler pipe and a reinforcing bracket, which can cause corrosion and potentially a fuel leak. As for the Galant, the automatic transmission oil cooler pipe on some vehicles may have insufficient corrosion-preventing plating. If so, this pipe can develop a hole, meaning transmission fluid can potentially seep out.

Mitsubishi’s Ralliart motorsport arm is no more.

It’s headline news due to Ralliart’s involvement in a plethora of Mitsubishi performance cars. Lancer Evolutions have worn the Ralliart name, while it’s also the tag attached to current Colt and Lancer hot hatchbacks.

However, the closure of Ralliart in this instance is simply the sunset for Mitsubishi’s motorsport involvement. The days of WRC glory are a thing of the past while the firm ceased competition in the Dakar rally last year, too. The lack of racing activity has drawn a sensible line under the company’s Ralliart arm.

Development of performance metal, such as the current Mitsubishi Evo X, has been in-house with Mitsubishi for a while, so we’ve been promised no noticeable change as a result of Ralliart’s announcement. Bring on the XI, then…

Mitsubishi RVR Crossover Going Global

Mitsubishi is expanding its plans to make its RVR compact crossover into a true global model. The RVR is now on sale in Tokyo — and will come to the U.S. badged as the Outlander Sport.

Mitsubishi will confirm details of the U.S. launch in April at the 2010 New York Auto Show. The CUV is expected in the U.S. this fall, most likely as a 2011 model. Mitsubishi has already confirmed its plans to sell the model in Europe with the ASX nameplate and will present it at the upcoming 2010 Geneva Auto Show. The new CUV will also go to China, where it will make its premiere at the 2010 Beijing Auto Show in late April.

Along with the name change, Mitsubishi will also be changing specifications. While the Japan-market RVR comes with a 1.8-liter engine and continuously variable transmission, plus the choice of front-wheel drive or full-time 4WD, models for Europe will be offered with 1.6-liter gasoline and 1.8-liter diesel options, plus a manual transmission.

For North America, however, Mitsubishi is on line to upgrade the CUV to a punchier, Lancer-derived 2.0-liter four. Whether the all-wheel-drive option and stick shift make it across the Pacific remains to be seen.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution Will Include Hybrid Drivetrain

A new Motor Trends report indicates that the next-generation Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution will go plug-in hybrid. We saw a glimpse of what a hybrid Evolution might offer when the PX-MiEV concept made its way to Tokyo. The production version will be based on the concept’s platform.

The Lancer Evolution XI will feature a 2.0-liter MIVEC turbo four-cylinder engine worth an estimated 320 hp paired with an electric motor from the i Miev. The motor will power the front wheels under most standard driving conditions and, when needed, the engine will kick in some rear-wheel assistance.

The result will be a combination of power and efficiency, boosting mileage through a several-mile electric-only range while delivering a solid 0 to 60 mph time of 4.5 seconds.

Here at Super Street, we've never really marched to the beat of our own drums when it comes to building project cars. Through the years our staff has taken on most of the Honda and Acura makes, turned out a S-chassis Nissan or two, and oddly enough, had a Skyline and Super GT Supra. OEMs have turned to us many times, too, for our input and for 2010, we're partnering up with Mitsubishi to see if we can turn out their new Lancer Sportback Ralliart in pure SS form.

You might be thinking, "Why not a Evo X GSR?" - well, we asked ourselves that, too. Despite a more powerful engine configuration and tuned suspension/brake package, the GSR already has plenty of aftermarket support for it; the Ralliart - and more specifically the Sportback version - is newer and since it's one step down from the Evo means it needs a little help, especially if it wants become the type of car its older brother is. All is not lost, however, because the Ralliart is still a performer. Using a different induction configuration and single scroll turbo on this 4B11, it puts out very well at 237hp (about 50hp less than the GSR) with 253lb-ft, and essentially uses the same drivetrain found in the Evo 9 - not to mention it's blessed with a Twin Clutch-Sportronic Shift Transmission (TC-SST), similar to the style (not the exact unit) the current Evo X MR has. That means you can drive it like an "auto" or use the paddle shifters for manual operation; we love both. TC-SST also gives us two different driving modes - Normal and Sport - and can even be adjusted for three driving surfaces: Tarmac, Snow and Gravel.

So what's the game plan? Quite simple. We're going to max-out performance for the stock engine configuration first - maybe a new hardpipe kit, air filter, downpipe, exhaust and ECU re-flash; then we'll see if the rumors of trading out to a GSR manifold/turbo and re-flash for 300hp is true. We want this to be a primo street car that can handle light track time, so we'll be setting it up with coilover dampers and stiffer sway bars as product development draws near. One area that will seriously be addressed is the brakes; the Ralliart suffers from not having the same Brembo calipers the GSR and MR models have and we've been told by Mitsubishi that they're not compatible, so we're exploring performance upgrades from larger caliper kits to new rotors, pads and lines. And since this is a Sportback, we'll be looking towards European wagon styling to see how we can set this Lancer apart. Ralliart Japan, anyone? Slammed? Phat ass wheels? You know this! The options really are open and endless at this stage, and you can bet that we'll be working with key manufacturers and tuners to do this car right.

Excitement is building as the first 25 full production all-electric Mitsubishi i-MiEV’s arrive at Bristol’s Royal Portbury Docks. Final preparation has already begun before the cars hit the road on December 12th 2009 as part of a West Midlands based government trial.

The i-MiEV’s left Japan by boat six weeks ago and their arrival has been eagerly awaited, especially by the end users and everyone following their progress via Mitsubishi Motors UK’s i-MiEV Facebook fan page.

i-MiEV – Leading The Market

The multi award winning Mitsubishi i-MiEV is a fully electric city car and the first real-life EV with zero tailpipe emissions made available by a mainstream manufacturer. It's a genuine car, ensuring no compromise in cabin space, seating 4 adults and room for luggage.

An Early Sales Triumph

Real-World Trials

The cars are taking part in one of the Government’s Ultra Low Carbon Vehicle Demonstrator projects, run by the Technology Strategy Board. Through an extensive selection process, members of the public have been selected by consortium partner, Coventry University, to trial the cars for 12 months allowing analysis of driving and charging behaviour.

The West Midlands CABLED (Coventry and Birmingham Low Emission Demonstrators) consortium combines the expertise of Arup – design and engineering consultant and project leader, power provider E.ON, the city councils of Birmingham and Coventry, three academic institutions, and five other car manufacturers, and is supported by Advantage West Midlands.

The first zero-emissions fully electric city car to be used on the government-funded Technology Strategy Board (TSB) user trials has begun testing in the West Midlands.

The Mitsubishi i-MiEV (Mitsubishi innovative Electric Vehicle), which has a top speed of 81mph, a range of 100 miles and can be trickle charged from flat to full in seven hours, is participating in a UK-wide project to test electric and ultra-low-emission vehicles.

Quentin Willson, one of the i-MiEV drivers participating in the trials, said: ‘The Mitsubishi i-MiEV is a forerunner of a transport revolution that eventually will change the world. At last here’s an electric car that doesn’t look like a church pew, seats four, does 80mph and costs less than a quid to charge.’

Over the next 12 months, keys to 25 Mitsubishi i-MiEVs will be given to test drivers by the Arup-led CABLED (Coventry and Birmingham Low Emission Vehicle Demonstrators) consortium, who are tasked with managing the £25m TSB Ultra Low Emission Vehicle Demonstrator Competition.

The i-MiEV trials are worth £15m and will see 110 vehicles tested on the roads of Birmingham and Coventry. Throughout the UK, a total of 340 vehicles will be tested using funding from the TSB and £2.5m from regional development agency, Advantage West Midlands.

Neil Butcher, Arup’s project leader of the CABLED consortium said: ‘Less than one per cent of the vehicles registered every year in the UK are electric and most of these are currently used in London. We think that by 2020 low-carbon cars will be commercially viable and it’s important that we start to understand the public’s reaction and provide the necessary infrastructure to prepare for this.’

He added: ‘The launch is a landmark occasion for the UK automotive industry and this project will begin to examine the points where the vehicles meet the built environment – energy generation, battery charging and driver behaviour. This is an important first step on our roads to a low-carbon future.’

The consortium will also benefit from a commitment to developing the necessary infrastructure to coordinate the trials from E.ON, Birmingham City Council and Coventry City Council, who will provide electrical charging points for vehicles across the two cities and access to Birmingham University’s hydrogen-refuelling station.

Throughout the trials, Aston University will be analysing and reporting the conclusions from the data generated by the vehicles.

Iain Gray, chief executive of the TSB, said: ‘The journey towards low-carbon transport will not be easy, but the demonstrator programme is the biggest project of its kind to date and is a major step in the right direction.’

Monaco gets four Mitsubishi i-MiEVs

The Principality of Monaco is best known for Formula One cars screaming through the streets every spring and a harbor full of mega-dollar yachts filled with the beautiful people. When those people head ashore, there's a good chance they will be motoring in something very fast and very expensive. This week, however, instead of high-powered race cars, the area around the Prince's palace was silent as four new cars were delivered by Mitsubishi. Prince Albert II was on hand as officials from the automaker turned over the battery-powered i-MiEVs for a test program. The i-MiEVs will be used by the local post office, electric utility, parking services and the Prince Albert II foundation. The goal is to promote low emissions transportation on the sunny Riviera.

Over the past year, the little Mitsubishi MiEV electric minicar has been making the rounds in the U.S. and abroad, with test fleets in the works in a number of countries. And although Mitsubishi hasn't yet announced how the MiEV might be sold or leased to the public in the U.S., it hasn't hesitated to let us in the motoring press sample it.

That includes in the vast Palm Springs area, which seemed a brave venue for the diminutive MiEV—sized between the Smart Fortwo and the Mini Cooper—given the prevalence of ridiculously large vehicles and foggy-eyed red-light runners. Although this editor has driven the MiEV at several locales at parking-lot speeds, and our companion site Green Car Reports posted a full drive report earlier this year, this gave us our first chance to get the MiEV up to highway speeds.

Our right-hook production (Japan-market) MiEV looked almost identical to the 'i' minicar, on which it's based. Just like in the 'i', which we also reported on this past week and drove at this same event, the narrow body is the most constraining part of the experience—you'll be bumping elbows with your passenger—but there's actually adequate headroom and legroom in front or in back. Thanks to the mid-engine layout of the 'i', with the little three-banger normally positioned just under the back seat and ahead of the rear wheels, very little cabin space goes unused yet more space in front and in back can go toward crumple zones.

Packaging for the battery and motor system, as with the 'i', is smart. The MiEV's 16-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack fits neatly with the motor system under the back seat and cargo floor and allows a real-world driving range of about 80 miles. Its motor produces 47 kW, which equates to the 63 horsepower that's the most permitted in so-called kei cars, a type of minicar that's exempt from some taxes in Japan.

Step into the i-MiEV and turn on the ignition, and unlike some electric vehicles you don't hear the whirring of cooling fans in the battery compartment almost instantly.

Moving away from a parking space, we noted that there's almost no—if any—creep when you lift your foot off the brake. With a slight press of the throttle pedal you're moving forward smoothly. Step on it a little more and you'll hear more of a faint whine—and if you haven't driven an electric vehicle before you'll be astonished by the available torque.

Neither the MiEV nor the 'i' that it's based on are downright quick, but the 'i' feels to have the advantage, at least from a standstill up to about 35 mph. We took the MiEV up to nearly 65 mph and at that point it didn't feel nearly as perky; the MiEV is limited to a top speed of 80 mph. At low speeds, the 2010 MiEV is much more in its element, feeling more substantial than the Smart Fortwo.

Also of note is that the MiEV's regenerative braking is very subtle; even by placing the shifter in the 'B' mode, which orders up more resistance, it's nowhere as aggressive as in the Mini E, for instance. There's also an Eco mode that cuts available power, aimed at eking the most out your charge, but in an area of high-speed boulevards it wasn't an option.

The MiEV was also very affected by load, which seems to be the case with most minicars; we noticed that with more weight, ride quality deteriorated.

Charging, as with most EVs, remains the single greatest hurdle. It takes about seven hours to charge with a 220-volt system and 14 hours with a household 110-volt AC outlet. We're still holding out for those special three-phase 220-volt quick chargers to become widely available; with them, Mitsubishi says you can get the battery pack to 80 percent in just 30 minutes.

2008 Mitsubishi Lancer GTS Compact Sedan

I've driven lots of cars that make idiots want to race me.

Usually I just ignore them and drive like a grandma until they go away, taking off in their sticker-covered cars with McDonnell-Douglass spoilers and Folgers-can exhaust tips. I think it's great that they want to race, just not on a public street.

And I've never driven a car that attracts more stupid, whiny-engined street racers than this Mitsubishi.

It's the Lancer GTS, a family car designed to look and feel sporty. It has a rock-hard suspension, a huge rear wing and styling that makes it look kinda sorta like the wicked-fast Mitsubishi Evolution X.

Despite what the kids in crooked hats think, though, the Lancer GTS is no Evolution. It actually feels like it's powered by an anemic hamster.

Other than the drivetrain, everything about this car feels raw and abrasive, exactly what a hardcore driving enthusiast wants. In many ways, it feels like it belongs on a racetrack, mainly because of the raucous suspension that makes even a mirror-smooth road feel like it's filled with potholes. Few street cars let you sense the road surface as precisely as this one, which is great if you want an engaging drive but no so cool if you want to be comfortable.

In a strange contradiction, though, this car that feels race-inspired in so many ways has an engine that feels, in comparison, like a wind-up toy.

The GTS has the same engine as all the other standard-issue Lancers, a 2.0-liter four-banger that makes 152 horsepower. That's actually a reasonable amount of power for a family car, but it seems out of place in a vehicle that feels spectacularly sporty in other ways.

It doesn't help matters that the engine is coupled to a continuously variable transmission, so you don't get the same sensation of speed as you would with a manual transmission or even, heaven forbid, a traditional automatic.

Of course, driving isn't all about power. Even without a super-powerful engine, the Lancer GTS is fun to toss around, rewarding your skill as a driver rather than your ability to step on the gas pedal. It doesn't come with traction control -- it's not even available as an option -- so you're always free to play with the limits of tire adhesion without an electronic schoolmarm stepping in to spoil your fun.

The Lancer GTS also excels as a regular family car, assuming you can live with the rough ride. It has comfortable front seats, a roomy back seat and lots of air bags to keep you safe in a wreck.

The big question, though, is whether you'll want to buy one. If you want your car to look fast but not necessarily be fast, then the Lancer GTS is a good buy for $18,490. For that money, it's a nice looking, fun-to-drive family car.

But if you want serious performance, you'll have to look elsewhere. The Evolution X will likely cost around $35,000, but more affordable speed machines are out there, like the Honda Civic Si, Acura RSX and Chevy Cobalt SS in the low $20,000 range. Does that mean there's room in the Mitsubishi showroom for a higher performance Lancer that's more affordable and less scary than the Evo? I sure hope so.

Pros: It's a stylish, fast-looking car with a super-firm, sporty feeling suspension.

Cons: It doesn't have the power to back up its racer looks.

There is a reason that this is the first car we plan on talking about – The Evolution was by far, hands down, the best all around bang for your buck in its prime from 2003-2006 (Evolution VIII & IX). This car, with its price tag of around $30,000 USD, was the best performance you could get out of a stock car, not to mention all of the aftermarket performance sellers who saw the possibilities with the Evolution.

Equipped with all-wheel-drive, the Evo, along with the Subaru WRX STi, collectively set a new standard for all around automotive performance. Sure the usual American muscle cars can offer great pricing on performance, but the Mitsubishi and it’s cousin are more than just “straight-line” cars. The Evolution put down jaw dropping numbers – tested stock when it came to slalom, braking, g-pad, and track lap times.

The sad news is that after 2006 Mitsubishi decided that it was time to revamp the Evolution for the tenth time. It could have been worse: Subaru decided that they would revamp the WRX STi, and decided that people should not have to choose whether they want a hatchback or not. Subaru felt it neccessary to make that decision for you. In 2008 ( and hopefully only 2008 ) the WRX STi will only be offered in the hatchback style. The Evolution X wins 2008 by default. Some people like the X better than the VIII or IX. We are not those people. Based on looks alone the X is nowhere near where the 8’s or 9’s were. Also the X is slightly heavier and a tad slower. This is not the end of the Evolution by any means, but as for us – we’ll stick with the golden age (2003-2006)

Seidl Tuning and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 8 is a very nice partnership. Seidl used to tune especially German cars, but know they’ve decided to beat this sharp Japanese.

Because the engine and suspension are up-to-date, they made only bodykit modifications – front bumper, side sills and rear bumper.

The front bumper comes from original lines and it’s slightly modified. There are vertical bars in side openings and both sides has small lollypops now.

The most distinctive change is in case of new paintwork of central part. Now it’s black and it looks very interesting. They continued in the sills and now we can enjoy extreme ones with sporting image.

The rear bumper was next and it consists of three big openings with exhaust tip in one of them. Overall, this bumper looks nice; it’s simple but has nice details. The way of German tuners.

They didn’t forget about wheels. Original rims were replaced by chromed alloys with low-profile tires. I think this wasn’t good move.

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evo’s characteristic rear wing was replaced by slightly retiring with stop light.

And that’s all. The German Seidl tuning proves that they can do also non-German machines. They made the extreme bodykit for the extreme car. It’s not perfect, but looks good and drives perfectly.

However, at the Touring’s heavens-to-the-high price, there are many other slick rides that are just as fun—however different in character—including the Mazda RX-8, the Infiniti G37, and the BMW 1-series. We wouldn’t buy a Touring without cross-shopping the others to see which best handles your own brand of touring.

What’s the Cost?

At $41,710, plus a couple grand for navigation, the Evo Touring is a near-$44K proposition. Yikes. And it remains hard to get around that price tag even when bombing around corners with as much hustle as you can muscle. As you can see from the photos, it doesn’t appear as though the new Evolution’s sheet metal has been altered greatly, though the die-hard Evo aficionados are sure to pick up on some the nuances here and there, such as the small fog lights up front and the disappearance of Olivier Boulay’s bold triangle in the grille.

One of the most obvious visual changes to the giant-killing turbocharged small car is at the rear, where a race car inspired diffuser adds contrast to the colour scheme (unless you buy a black one), while at the same time reducing the turbulence in the airflow underneath the car for better high speed stability.

Mitsubishi made the subtle changes to the exterior of the car to better reflect the current WRC Rally car, with the abovementioned fog lights located either side of the front-mount intercooler forming part of the new front bumper section.

This front end may may look similar to the Evo VIII, but in fact is all new and includes a number of changes to improve performance.

The lower air dam’s opening has been increased to “raise engine cooling efficiency” by providing the intercooler with greater volumes of air, and in Japan you can even specify your brand-spanking Evo IX with an air dam extension and rear wing Gurney flap that help to improve the Mitsubishi’s aerodynamics.

A little disappointing given that with a little tweaking (more boost or bigger turbo) the Mitsubishi Evolution IX can produce so much more power. Nonetheless, the Evo 9 available in Australia is still a serious street and rally racing machine. The Evo comes in as the second best sports car in Australia sitting after the Mazda RX-8 because although it is faster than the RX-8 (0-100 in 6.2 for the RX-8) it is still.. essentially.. a lancer.
New-look alloy wheels also form part of the Evo IX’s exterior upgrade, and inside the car things have been tizzied up as well, but like the exterior the alterations are not exactly what you’d call dramatic and most people probably won’t care, with the changes limited to the dashboard finish and the accelerator, brake and clutch pedals, while better acoustic damping works its magic unseen.

Having driven an Evo VI TME and an Evo VIII, it must be said that their flamboyant appearances certainly do garner a bit of attention on the road, but of far more import to most enthusiastic drivers as well as for me is the way in which these turbocharged cars go about their business.

And in 2005, we can expect even more fireworks.

Perhaps the biggest new feature to the Evolution’s 1997cc powerplant is the adoption of variable valve timing on the intake system, or MIVEC as the Japanese car maker calls it (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing Electronic Control system).

The MIVEC system helps the 16-valve 4G63 engine liberate more power at higher revs and more torque at lower revs, with peak torque of 400Nm @ 3000rpm and maximum power of 206kW (280hp) @ 6500rpm.

Mitsubishi also made changes to the exhaust-gas driven turbocharger “that result in higher torque and produce better response for improved engine performance across its full rev range” to use Mitsubishi’s own words.

Such increased engine performance puts the 0-100km/h sprint time at 5.9 seconds according to the Japanese figures, with top speed at just over 230km/h.

In Japan, the Evolution IX is offered in three trim levels, with the GSR benefiting from all of Mitsubishi’s rally-derived gadgets for the ultimate road-going ride, giving drivers grip and handling levels that would make Lamborghini Gallardo owners take notice.

The GSR gets ACD (Active Center Differential), Super AYC (Active Yaw Control), customised ABS (Sport ABS braking) and an electronically controlled all-wheel control component system, not to mention a 6-speed manual gearbox.

Next up is the RS, the motorsport model that was created to cater for the rally motorsport market, which incorporates a lighter body, a new titanium-magnesium turbocharger compressor wheel (instead of aluminium alloy), a 5-speed close ratio gearbox plus ACD and a mechanical rear LSD all-wheel control. It tips the scales at just 1320kg, lighter than the GSR and GT, weighing 1410kg and 1390kg respectively.

The third model is the GT, a new model for the Evolution series, which features the best of the GSR and RS models, which “brings together RS’s turbocharger and drivetrain specification and GSR’s comfort-bias body with its enhanced sound deadening,” according to Mitsubishi. As a result of the lighter turbo compressor wheel, the RS and GT models make 407Nm @ 3000rpm, up 7Nm on the GSR model.

All Mitsubishi Evolution IX models feature new rear springs that reduce the vehicle’s height somewhat, a move that the Japanese automaker says improves rear end stability in the RS and GT models and for the GSR enables the Super AYC to work a little more effectively at high cornering speeds.

The aluminium roof panel first seen on the Evolution VIII MR model has been fitted to all models for 2005, and other features include freshly tuned Bilstein shockers in addition to big Brembo brakes on the on GSR and GT models.

Mitsubishi is set to premiere a rally version of its new Lancer Evolution X which has been specially developed for the Australian Classic Adelaide tarmac rally by Team Mitsubishi Ralliart (TMR).

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution TMR SST Club-Spec will make its public competitive debut as the flagship of Mitsubishi’s 12th year as official vehicle supplier to the event.

While certainly no slouch, the standard Evolution TC-SST on which it is based has received a raft of performance and competition upgrades.

The Club-Spec car boasts an upgraded 248kW engine, TMR race exhaust, lowered progressive-rate springs, competition brake pads and 245R18 R-Spec tyres.

Competition requirements also mean a roll cage, modified front seats with 6-point harnesses and two fire extinguishers have also been added.

The Team Mitsubishi Ralliart team, based in Melbourne, handles the development and preparation of competition cars and enhancement of Mitsubishi road vehicles.

The Lancer Evolution TMR SST Club-Spec is just one of 45 vehicles from Mitsubishi undertaking either competitive or logistical duties at this year’s Classic Adelaide tarmac rally.

Almost the entire Mitsubishi range will be utilised at the event, delivering equipment to stages, checking spectator locations, scanning the rally stages at high and low speeds, leading and following every category and providing transport for the Chief Safety Officer, medical response team, timing team, stewards, scrutineers and other officials.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evo XI May Get Plug-in Hybrid Tech

Mitsubishi is set to unveil a new proprietary plug-in hybrid system in the Concept PX MiEV (pictured) at this month’s 2009 Tokyo Motor Show. The new system combines differential electric motors with Mitsubishi’s Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC) all-wheel drive system--already found in the Evo--and electronically controlled active yaw control. The front and rear wheels are powered by two permanent magnet synchronous motors, while a compact four-cylinder MIVEC engine is also used to power the front wheels or act as a generator.

According to latest reports, a similar system could be used in the next-generation Lancer Evolution XI (Evo XI for short). The first production models equipped with the advanced plug-in hybrid system is due in 2013 and company insiders say the technology could be directed at the new Evo eventually.

However, due to financial constraints, development on the next-generation Evo has been stalled so any launch of a plug-in hybrid Evo is still years away.

On Tuesday, I spent an hour driving the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, an electric vehicle based on its Japan-only i city car. The i is a kei car, a specific classification of cars that is required to be of a certain size and engine displacement.

Yes, Mitsubishi has an electric car.

Yes, it’s supposed to go on sale in 2009 in Japan. Moreover, Mitsubishi is expected to announce on Thursday that it will provide a fleet of EVs to an agency on the West Coast this year.

Unlike most driving events held during the New York auto show, my drive in the i-MiEV was without minder, in the best sense. There was no predetermined route and no one to tell me to take things slow and stay on the straight and smooth highway.

You could call it a soft introduction. During a press conference at the auto show Thursday morning, Mitsubishi’s president and chief executive, Shin Kurihara, stood in front of a car covered by the usual auto show drape but talked about the small fully exposed car beside it instead — Mitsubishi’s i-MiEV electric car, in white.

Mr. Kurihara said it was a “real four-passenger car” that would go on sale this summer in Japan. The first car, he said, would roll off the assembly line in July.

The particular car on the stand was left-hand drive, he noted, which has “special meaning.” The i-MiEV is running in test fleets in the United States, where, Mr. Kurihara announced, it will eventually go on sale, though he gave no timetable.

So what is this i-MiEV of which I speak? It is a tiny car with very little wheel overhang. It has been proved to get 75 to 100 miles in a single charge, Mr. Kurihara said. And it takes 14 hours to fully charge through a 110-volt electrical outlet. It takes half that time with a 220-volt outlet, and Mitsubishi is developing a quick charge feature.

Mitsubishi is introducing two new concept vehicles at the 41st Tokyo Motor show this month but of the two, it's only for the i-MiEV CARGO that the company is actually taking orders. Both concepts, the PX-MiEV hybrid crossover, and the i-MiEV CARGO are derived from the company's i-MiEV electric vehicle (on sale in 2010), but while the crossover concept adds some perhaps still partially-theoretical hybrid technology and a variety of gee-whiz techno goodies that may or may not eventually be incorporated in a production vehicle, the i-MiEV CARGO simply takes the production-ready MiEV and adds a square cargo-box, rather suggesting that little or no further work needs to occur before it could be for sale.

With its 5'-5" wide, 3'-8" tall box, the i-MiEV CARGO is obviously suitable for a variety of commercial purposes, particularly in larger cities in which pollution is increasingly regulated. Although industry figures continue to disagree about the level of demand we will see for full electric vehicles, this appears to be one EV with undeniable market potential. Which is no doubt the reason the company is already taking pre-orders for possible delivery in April, 2010.

The theme for next month’s 2009 Tokyo Motor Show is quickly shaping up to be an electric one, with yesterday Honda showing off its new CR-Z Concept 2009 hybrid sports car and today Mitsubishi revealing a new plug-in hybrid concept based on its Pajero SUV.

Powered by the new proprietary plug-in hybrid system, which significantly extends the frequency a hybrid vehicle is driven in all-electric mode, the 2009 Mitsubishi Concept PX-MiEV promises a fuel economy in excess of 117.6 mpg.

Mitsubishi’s plug-in hybrid system combines differential electric motors with its Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC) all-wheel drive system and electronically controlled active yaw control. The front and rear wheels are powered by two permanent magnet synchronous motors, while a 1.6-liter four-cylinder MIVEC engine is also used to power the front wheels or act as a generator.

In addition, the vehicle comes with the newly-developed plug-in hybrid system in which electronic circuitry automatically switches to the optimum drive mode for different driving conditions and remaining energy in the drive battery to extract maximum efficiency from the electric motors and from the gasoline engine.

Designers looked at almost every elements of the car in an effort to maximize fuel economy. For example, LEDs were used for the head and tail lamps as they use less power than conventional xenon and halogen units, while the wheel hubs feature a special design that helps improve brake cooling as well as aerodynamic performance.

The interior was designed to give an image of an airplane cockpit, with an instrument panel that envelops the passengers and plenty of LED elements. The vehicle also features a windshield that uses heat-reflecting glass to reduce the amount of heat energy passing through and uses infrared ray blocking glass in the door windows. The body paint also incorporates heat-reflective and insulation technology.

Mitsubishi is previewing its next-generation CUV in the Land of the Rising Sun next month, and like nearly every other concept bound for the Tokyo Motor Show, the Mitsubishi PX-MiEV is packing a number of hybrid technologies to maximize fuel efficiency, decrease emissions and keep performance on par. Plus, the PX-MiEV comes with an added helping of "cocochi" – Japanese for "cozy."

PX is Mitsubishi shorthand for "plug-in hybrid crossover," so a 1.6-liter inline-four powers the front wheels, along with a generator, and a new plug-in system allows users to tap into the grid with either a 100 or 200-volt outlet. The PX-MiEV boasts an EV mode with a 30-mile range which can toggle between front- and all-wheel drive, a series hybrid mode when the juice dries up and a parallel hybrid system when under full load. Mitsu's E-4WD system shuffles power to the rear wheels when needed, using the same S-AWC and E-AYC systems as the Evolution X. The PX-MiEV can send torque left-to-right depending on the conditions, and a new center differential motor (unlike the mutli-plate clutch setup on the Evo) actively tweaks torque output to the rear wheels to increase grip.

Inside, the PX-MiEV sports a spartan interior with a number of technologies to keep occupants happy and healthy, including heat reflective glass and paint, along with individual air conditioners. Active safety systems – ranging from a "Multi-Around Monitor" to a front-facing camera that detects fatigue, then alerts the driver through a series of visual, audio and "vibrational" warnings – are sure to find their way into future Mitsubishi models. The 2009 Mitsubishi Raider is largely unchanged for what is likely its final model year. 2009 Mitsubishi Raider pickup truck is a restyled Dodge Dakota. Raider comes in a single LS trim level. A 4-door extended cab is rear-wheel drive only. The 4-door Double Cab crew cab is available with rear drive or part-time 4-wheel drive that should not be left engaged on dry pavement but has a low-range gear for off-roading. This compact crossover SUV comes in ES, SE, and XLS trims, each with a choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. 2009 Mitsubishi Outlander's AWD system can be set for front-drive only, for AWD, and for a locked-in 50/50 front/rear power split. The five-door Lancer Sportback shares everything with the sedan variant from the C-pillar forward. Behind the C-pillar the Sportback gets a unique rear end. The overall length is slightly longer than the sedan and offers more cargo carrying capacity.

However, this is one that we were all waiting for, the EVO X FQ-400. Sadly, it will only be sold in Britain, and no were else. So, this is just to show what we're missing.Visual upgrades from the standard EVO X include, a more aggressive styling kit that comprises of a heavily vented bonnet, a new lightweight composite front bumper featuring carbon-fibre elements on its leading edges, a rear wing incorporating a gurney strip and a roof-mounted 'Vortex Generator', composite side skirts, a re-styled rear bumper with a carbon fibre diffuser and a huge square center exhaust pipe, plus additional lighting and High Intensity Discharge (HID) lights.
Inside, aside from the Recaro bucket sports seats, the range-topping Lancer Evolution X also gains an FQ-400 liveried handbrake handle and carbon fibre gear shifter. Changes include a wider track and lowered suspension featuring Eibach springs and Bilstein shock absorbers plus new lightweight 18-inch, nine spoke alloy wheels fitted with Toyo Proxes R1R tires. The new 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X FQ-400 will be going on sale next month in the UK with a price tag starting at £49,999 ($79,641 USD). Although that's way too much for a Mitsubishi, it's actually a bargain for a super-sedan that accelerates faster than any sedan, and as fast as a proper super car.

For 2009, Mitsubishi restyled the Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder's front and rear bumper fascias, and the GT model also gets three significant upgrades for 2009: a new dual exhaust system yields a more powerful sound while also boosting horsepower to 265 (up from 260); standard high intensity discharge (HID) head lamps sharpen front styling and aid nighttime visibility, and standard Active Stability Control (ASC) enhances driving safety. Mitsubishi Eclipse is a sporty two door, four-seat coupe with good looks and a roomy interior. It appeals to a large audience with its youthful looks and affordable price.

Mitsubishi Eclipse has three trims: GS, GS-Sport, and GT. Power is delivered by a 162-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine paired with either a five-speed manual transmission or four-speed automatic with manual shift mode. A 265-hp 3.8-liter V6 engine powers the GT and comes with a six-speed manual or a five-speed automatic. Standard safety features include vehicle stability control with traction control, frontal-impact, side-impact and side curtain airbags, anti-lock brakes, and a tire pressure monitoring system.

For 2010, Mitsubishi has enhanced the GS model of Mitsubishi Eclipse with styling cues from the GT trim. Also, Bluetooth, rear view camera, and auxiliary input jack are available.
